How to Install Large Decals the Right Way (Simple Tips for a Perfect Install!)
Installing large decals might seem intimidating at first, but itโs actually super easy once you know the right steps. Whether you ordered a full printed decal with air release vinyl or a precision die-cut decal made from Oracal 651, weโre here to walk you through it. Follow these simple tips and tricks for the best results!
Step 1: Start with a Clean Surface
Before you do anything, clean the area where youโre applying the decal. Use soap and water first, then wipe it down with isopropyl alcohol to remove any oils or residue. Make sure the surface is completely dry before moving to the next step.
A clean surface = better adhesion and longer life for your decal!
Step 2: Position Your Decal with Painterโs Tape
Use painterโs tape to help position your decal exactly where you want it.
Hereโs the trick:
- Apply a strip of painterโs tape across the top of the decal, securing it in place like a โhinge.โ
- This lets you flip the decal up and down to double-check placement without losing your alignment.
Step 3: Choose the Right Install Method Based on Your Decal
- Printed Decals (Full color with air release vinyl):
These are made with premium air-release material, making dry installs super simple. After setting your hinge, peel the backing paper down slowly and use a squeegee (or a credit card wrapped in a cloth) to press the decal down, working from the center outward. The air release channels help push out bubbles for a smooth finish! - Die Cut Decals (Single color Oracal 651 vinyl):
Die cut decals can be installed wet or dry, but the wet method is often easier for large installs:- Mix a few drops of baby shampoo or dish soap with water in a spray bottle.
- Lightly mist the surface and the adhesive side of the decal (after peeling the backing).
- This gives you some time to slide the decal into perfect position before it sticks.
- Once positioned, use a squeegee to push out all the water and bubbles, working from the center out.
- Let it dry completely (this could take a few hours) before peeling off the transfer tape.
Step 4: Final Touches
After installation, go over the decal lightly with your squeegee or your fingers wrapped in a soft cloth to make sure itโs fully stuck down. Avoid washing the area for at least 24 hours to let the adhesive fully bond.
Helpful Reminders:
- Take your time โ especially with large decals!
- Always double-check alignment before you commit.
- Keep the decal warm if itโs cold out โ vinyl gets stiff in low temps.
- If you do get a small bubble, donโt panic โ you can gently pop it with a pin and push the air out.
Youโre all set! Follow these steps, and youโll get a clean, professional install every time. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out โ weโre always happy to help!
